UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador Angelina Jolie is the patron of the 2007 World Refugee Day Photo Contest. Students are invited to submit their photos around the theme, “A new home, a new life.”

Every year, millions of refugees are forced to flee their home countries due to persecution, war and human rights violations. Of the many refugees who cannot return home, some are fortunate to find safety and a new life in the United States.

Photos should illustrate the United States’ long tradition of welcoming refugees and the contribution refugees have made to their new communities.

Deadline for entries is April 30, 2007. Winners will be flown to Washington, DC, for the World Refugee Day ceremony on June 20. To learn more, read the contest rules and guidelines.

2. Burundian refugees return home - Free DVD

Venice is returning to a country she hardly knows. She fled a terrible civil war in Burundi when she was just a child, losing her home and her parents. After years of separation, Venice has found her parents and is ready to restart her life. Order a copy of Returning Home, a free DVD about Venice's return from a refugee camp in Tanzania to her home country.

The number of refugees from Burundi living in camps in Tanzania has fallen, reflecting continuing improvement in the security situation in the Great Lakes region of Africa. Refugees are going home to Burundi. UNHCR has helped more than a quarter-of-a-million people return to Burundi since March 2002. UNHCR hopes to assist 75,000 Burundians repatriate by the end of this year. Those deciding to return are encouraged by the hopeful promise of peace and stability in their homelands, though the availability of basic social services remains a concern for many returnees.
