Welcome to the first issue of Teachers' Corner, the UN Refugee Agency's (UNHCR) E-alert created for educators like you who are teaching about refugees, human rights and tolerance in the classroom. In this update:
- Win a trip to Washington
Deadline March 31
Remind your students to enter the Sixth Annual World Refugee Day Poster Contest sponsored by UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador Angelina Jolie. Winning students will receive a trip to Washington! Deadline March 31, 2006.
- Have your school featured on UNrefugees.org
More than half of the world's refugees are children. Forced to flee their homes from persecution and war, many are robbed of their childhood and forced to fight for their basic survival. Help provide protection, clean water and emergency aid to refugee children affected by tragedy through the Lend a Helping Hand service-learning project for students. Deadline March 15, 2006.
- News to use in the classroom
Chad/Darfur: A happy start to the New Year for one lost Darfur boy and his sister
Like millions of Sudanese displaced by fighting in Darfur, young Ibrahim was left on his own at the age of 14 - separated from his family in the attack on his village. For two years he survived on odd jobs until last October, when he heard his older sister was living with her own children and husband in one of UNHCR's 12 refugee camps across the border in Chad.
Pakistan earthquake: For children, classes under canvas offer room with a view
Fourteen-year-old Nazbergam and her sister Sabermina, 15, have been living in the Banda Sahib Khan relief camp in Pakistan's North West Frontier Province (NWFP) since October's earthquake destroyed their home and those of much of their village. But amid the hardship is a reason to be grateful. For the first time in their lives, the teen-aged girls are going to school.
