1. Security in eastern Chad deteriorates

Five-year-old Khadidja is not sure why she is in eastern Chad and she does not remember the name of the village in Darfur from which she fled.

Mohamet, aged 15, fills in the blanks. He says his Western Darfur village was attacked by militias. He was very scared but, with his family, reached the Seneit village border area in eastern Chad. He says he misses his friends, and he would rather be back home.

Khadidja and Mohamet are just two of thousands of Sudanese who fled to Chad to escape vicious attacks on civilians in Darfur.

Though refugees continue to seek safety in Chad, the security situation there remains extremely volatile and unpredictable, with clashes between government and rebel forces in recent weeks.

Due to security concerns, UNHCR has withdrawn most of its staff from six camps in eastern Chad housing Sudanese refugees from Darfur. The staff have been relocated to safer areas while a skeleton staff continue to provide aid to the nearby camps and to monitor the situation.

UNHCR and its partners have been assisting more than 218,000 refugees from Darfur in 12 camps in eastern Chad. There are also some 90,000 displaced persons in eastern Chad, while some 46,000 refugees from the Central African Republic have sought refugee in the south. Share the latest news, videos and photos with your class.

2. AID DARFUR campaign

Tens of thousands of people have been killed in Sudan's Darfur region. Millions more have fled their homes to Chad or remain displaced within Darfur. Most are women and children, terrified while the fighting continues.

"Children of Darfur also have their dreams - to return to their villages in peace. Join the campaign to AID DARFUR." - Meryl Streep

AID DARFUR supports UNHCR's life saving work with Darfur's refugees.
